The Speer/federal rep fired both 165 gr .40, and 147 gr 9mm HST into ballistic gelatin from the same distance. They both opened up perfectly, and penetrated about 14 1/2 inches as i recall. The recovered rounds looked almost identical with only the differnce in 147 to 165 gr in weight between them.

HST 147gr is going to give you better overall ballistics. Better penetration, better expansion, easier to handle recoil, etc. 147gr 9mm is subsonic so it's less flippy and less noisy than a +P round, as well as more reliable expansion since the bullet is a bit heavier and isn't travelling ridiculously fast.
