Most importantly always drop your backpack by pressing B when you engage in combat. When in combat, always watch your stamina level. If your stamina drops to zero, you become effectively useless and you should plan your moves carefully. Turn up dismemberment, death, nests, hunger. Make the world harder and more realistic as you feel, because you can always edit advanced settings when you import.
