Both my model 99's, one from circa 1920 and the other from the early 1960's, will decock by pulling the trigger back just as the lever closes. When closing the action, you'll feel noticiable increased resistance the last inch or so, that's when to pull the trigger so the sear releases as the action closes the bolt.

I have an old .22 caliber Marlin Model 39 (maybe model 39 A, hard to see exactly). It seems to work OK except there is no firing pin in it. The serial number under the lever action is "F 1134?", so I think originally made in 1949. Also has a engraving inside the action that has a date of 9/26/59.If he's been dry-firing it, it's possible the firing pin is mushroomed slightly or the spot where the firing pin hits on the barrel is peened so there's a dent there now which reduces the force the firing pin can put on it to pinch the rim of the cartridge. The firing pin on my 60's 39A takes a fairly solid push of the finger to get flush (with hammer cocked as described). ... I have a 39A from the late 70's and finally went through a firing pin. Marlin 39a hard to close lever on a round. I got my 39a (1948 model) out to shoot today after working on it a bit. I replaced the broken finger lever spring, replaced a missing sight ramp screw, put in a Wolfe reduced power hammer spring, mounted a Lyman 17a globe front sight, and cleaned and lubed the bore and action. The gun shoots lights out.
Hi, My Marlin 1894 with 2 piece firing pin became one with a 3 piece pin today. Not having striped the bolt before, it took a little while to realise what had happened, but it eventually dawned on me that the bits that had droped out were the now two halfs of the rear firing pin. As the rifle is a 1981 pre cross bolt safety in 44, I'm wondering ...
