Hey gang, A fella at work who knows a lot about cars & engines told me a problem with some of the Northstar 4.6 V8's. He claims that the earlier engine block castings were prone to fail due to porasity in the casting. He claimed that GM's "fix" was to offer coolant "pucks" to add to your coolant to stop erosion of the engine block.

If you're mechanically inclined they're not too bad, the access for the rear ones is a bit tight but not much once you get the plug wires out of the way, change them while you're there, the coil packs are numbered. Front bank is 2,4,6,8 rear bank is 1,3,5,7. The front cyls have the cyl #'s on the head.The '90 4.5 and the '91-95 4.9 are virtually indentical. Only major differences being a stroke increase, deletion of A.I.R. system, and new design oil pump on '91 and up 4.9's.
