Solved: Wrangler TJ dying/stalling while driving. New guy here. I currently have a 1999 Wrangler Sahara (4.0, 5 speed) and just wanted to share a little problem I encountered the other day. On the way back down a little off road trail, my Jeep started to stall, buck, and eventually die on me, even when we were on the road.
The Jeep didn’t complain one bit in the extreme heat. Death Valley in JULY 2016 with my 2013 JKR —3.6 V6 and 5-speed auto. It was 120F. I read the forum and replaced everything that I could find that would be causing the issue. Fan, radiator (went moshimoto), radiator tubes, thermostat (replaced with ripp), water pump, coolant, air filter, sc oil, engine oil.Wrangler: Overheating When Idling Causes and Solutions. 1. Low Coolant. While it seems counter intuitive, when your Wrangler is low on coolant may run ok with wind hitting the radiator, but when idling there’s just not enough coolant to properly cool the engine. Solution: Fill the radiator and coolant reservoir back up.Allow the engine to warm up for 5 or 10 minutes. Turn motor off and wait one minute. Relieve pressure, remove cap slowly. Then squeeze/massage the upper radiator hose, you'll see bubbles at the fill point and the radiator level will drop; Add coolant. Rinse and repeat until the bubbles stop.
