Hi, I recently re-read James Forsyth "The sporting rifle and its projectiles" as I read it for z very first time some years before and I became interested why is it that muzzloading rifles (specially those shooting patched round balls) are most accurate with one specific powder amount. It is obvious why rifle's accuracy deteriorates when loaded with too much powder.

The photos below show one of the famous mahogany stocked rifles by Haines. The rifle I am using for inspiration is #81 shown in RCA vol 1. It is maple stocked but the patch box and carving are very similar to the mahogany stocked rifles. But, either paper patched bullets in shallow grooves must be used, nor a good base wad to seal the gases behind the bullet needs to be used so that you can get the velocity needed to stabilize these longer bullets in flight.

Add some soap to aid cleaning especially if you use an oil or greasy patch lubricant.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great. It has a higher ignition temperature than pure black. Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. You will need real black powder to prime, for sure.I have bent a couple by doing the following; Remove the hammer, place the hole area in a vise, heat the neck area to red with torch, bend as needed, then allow to cool before removing from the vise.
