A blown fuse could cause this problem. Most likely this is a faulty latch in the liftgate. Since the ajar light is on this tells me the latch is the problem. Once you have the gate open you can test for power when pressing the open button. If you have power and ground then this will verify that the latch is the problem.

In that case you'd probably have to put down the back seat and pull the rear cover up from inside. Won't be easy but should work.
